Report from the recent meeting at the UN
H.E. Mr. Miroslav Lajcak, President of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly, met with various NGOs on Oct. 7th at the UN. He answered questions from the attendees and spoke about his priorities for the UN. They are the SDGs, which he hopes to promote by making them "commercially attractive." One cannot always ask for donations; one must engage business in the UN goals.
Another priority is migration, for which there is no legal framework, as there is for refugees. Of course, the top priority is peace - stopping wars, as well as preventing them while respecting human rights.
Mr. Lajcak cited the emphases made by all the member delegations at the September UN session. These were the SDGs, climate, migration, terrorism and nuclear weapons. He also mentioned the forthcoming study of Water, as a natural and political force. That study will start on March 3, 2018.
The NGOs asked about their lack of access to UN meetings, especially in light of Mr. Lajcak's statement that they are the eyes and contacts on the ground for UN programs. There was no immediate answer to this inquiry.
